Day at the beach and Turtle Walk

We had a wonderful couple of days while Mimi was visiting with us. Yesterday we drove through VERY heavy traffic on our way to Cocoa Beach. Even though the shuttle mission was scrubbed we still enjoyed playing in the surf and burying the boys in the sand. After we showered and changed, we went to The Cove restaurant in Satelight beach. It was as if we entered a time warp. There was a senior lounge singer and his elderly keyboard playing wife, a disco ball and dancefloor which actually had several seniors dancing on it. The food was great and the atmosphere was a little over the top!

The icing on the cake was the turtle walk! We had reserved a space on the walk in advance and met at a beachside park at 9pm. We watched a long and informative slide show on marine turtles as the volunteer scouts went out on the beach looking for turtles. We waited and waited and...waited. Then finally at 11:15pm (after a quick prayer) they spotting a nesting loggerhead. We walked down the beach in a large group and got very close to this giant reptile. She was about 3 feet in diameter and was already dropping eggs in the hole she had dug with her flippers. They were shining a red light on her so we could see better in the dark. After several minutes of covering the nest with sand, she turned around and went back to the ocean where she disappeared into the surf. As she was heading out, we spotted another large turtle making it's way up the beach to perform the same task. They left behind tracks that looked like a tank. It was truly an amazing experience for us all. The boys were pooped but excited by their animal adventure.
